Phonological Dyslexia

Understanding and Supporting Students

Phonological dyslexia is a specific type of reading difficulty that primarily affects a student’s ability to decode words through phonological processing, which is the ability to identify and manipulate the sounds in language. For students with phonological dyslexia, recognizing the relationship between letters and sounds is challenging, leading to difficulties in reading fluently, accurately, and with comprehension. At Westbridge Academy, we understand the importance of early identification and tailored interventions to help students with phonological dyslexia reach their full potential in reading and beyond.

What is Phonological Dyslexia?

Phonological dyslexia, also called dysphonetic dyslexia, is characterized by a difficulty in phonological awareness, which includes recognizing sounds in spoken words, understanding rhyme, and segmenting or blending sounds to form words. This type of dyslexia often makes it difficult for students to decode unfamiliar words and affects their spelling abilities as well. Unlike surface dyslexia, which impacts visual memory for whole words, phonological dyslexia directly impairs the student’s ability to “sound out” words, especially those that are unfamiliar.

Students with phonological dyslexia may show signs such as:

  • Struggling with sounding out words and blending sounds
  • Avoiding reading aloud or displaying frustration with reading
  • Slow or laborious reading that lacks fluency
  • Difficulty with spelling and phonics-based tasks
  • Relying heavily on visual memory to recognize familiar words, often skipping or misreading unfamiliar ones.

How Phonological Dyslexia Affects Learning

For students with phonological dyslexia, the reading process requires far more cognitive effort, which can impact comprehension, reading enjoyment, and overall academic performance. These students might perform well in oral discussions and demonstrate strengths in other areas, but they struggle with tasks that require reading accuracy and fluency. The constant effort needed to decode can lead to fatigue, lower confidence, and avoidance of reading-related activities.

At Westbridge Academy, we recognize that these challenges often extend beyond reading and impact other subjects as well, particularly those that require extensive written instruction, such as math word problems and language arts.

Westbridge Academy’s Approach to Supporting Students with Phonological Dyslexia

Our commitment to multi-modal, student-centered instruction is essential for supporting students with phonological dyslexia. We offer a comprehensive approach that combines evidence-based reading interventions, personalized instruction, and targeted accommodations to help each student progress confidently in their reading journey.

R

Evidence-Based Reading Interventions

At Westbridge Academy, we implement structured literacy approaches, such as Orton-Gillingham and other phonics-based methods, that focus on breaking down reading into its foundational components. These programs are systematic, sequential, and repetitive, designed to strengthen phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and word recognition. Students engage in activities that allow them to practice these skills in a supportive environment, gradually building their confidence and ability to decode words.

R

Multi-Sensory Learning Techniques

For students with phonological dyslexia, multi-sensory instruction is particularly effective. This approach engages multiple senses simultaneously, helping students process and retain phonetic information. For example, students might use tactile tools such as sand or textured letters to trace words while vocalizing each sound. Visual aids, auditory exercises, and kinesthetic activities make reading instruction more engaging and accessible, supporting students’ ability to connect sounds with letters.

R

Skill-Based and Personalized Instruction

Recognizing that each student’s experience with phonological dyslexia is unique, we tailor our instruction to meet individual needs. Our skill-based placement ensures that students work on specific reading skills that match their current abilities, allowing for targeted progress without feeling overwhelmed. Through small group work and one-on-one tutoring, students receive the personalized support necessary to tackle challenging aspects of reading at a comfortable pace.

R

Building Confidence and Resilience

Our approach to helping students with phonological dyslexia goes beyond academic support; we are dedicated to building self-confidence and resilience. At Westbridge Academy, we celebrate each student’s progress and encourage them to embrace their strengths. By creating a supportive and understanding environment, we help students see reading as a skill they can improve with effort and practice, rather than a barrier to success.

R

Accommodations and Classroom Support

To support students in all areas of learning, we offer accommodations that allow students to participate fully and successfully. These accommodations may include:
  • Access to audiobooks and text-to-speech technology
  • Extra time on reading assignments and assessments
  • Large-print or high-contrast texts, and
  • Simplified instructions or verbal directions to complement written instructions.
By offering these supports, we empower students with phonological dyslexia to access grade-level content, reducing frustration and helping them stay engaged with their studies.

Partnering with Families

At Westbridge Academy, we believe in partnering with families to support each student’s journey. We provide resources and workshops to help parents understand phonological dyslexia and offer practical strategies to encourage reading at home. We encourage open communication between teachers and parents to ensure that students receive consistent support across all areas of their lives.

A Commitment to Lifelong Literacy

Our goal at Westbridge Academy is to foster a love for reading and lifelong learning in every student, regardless of the challenges they may face. By combining specialized instruction, multi-modal techniques, and individualized support, we equip students with the tools they need to overcome phonological dyslexia and experience the joy and empowerment that come with literacy. Our commitment to understanding and addressing each student’s needs ensures that phonological dyslexia is not a barrier but a stepping stone on the path to academic and personal success.
